About the Role:

The Academic Fellow will support Instructors in teaching technical skills and supporting career change among our student population.

At Tech Elevator, our academic fellows are accomplished Tech Elevator software development bootcamp graduates who have a passion for sharing their knowledge and expertise with our current students and supporting instructors. Essential Functions:

Instructor Support

  • Assists the Instructors in communication and tracking of pre-work completion for incoming students.
  • Complies with the record-keeping policies and procedures related to student performance (e.g. grading, attendance, quiz scores, etc.)
  • May configure student laptops depending on campus location, code repositories, and academic dashboards to support the upcoming cohort.
Pathway Support
  • Tutors and prepares students for the technical interviewing process by supporting them through group study, exercise review, and whiteboard sessions.
  • Supports the efforts of the Pathway Director(s) and promotes student participation in the Pathway Program.
Student Support
  • Takes an interest in the academic progress and performance of individual students.
  • Serves as the first line of support to students who get stuck on exercises, side projects, and capstones.
  • Conveys a sense of enthusiasm for programming and the field of software development to help motivate and inspire students.
  • Responsible for looking after the individual needs of students in order to help promote a high graduation rate while maintaining a consistent level of technical competence among graduates.
  • Participates in campus meetings by providing qualitative student feedback.
  • Engages in campus meetups and events by leading and/or supporting attendees.
  • Attends daily standup during student capstone projects.
  • Recognizes and takes appropriate and timely action by escalating students' poor academic performance or personal misconduct to their instructor and/or Campus Director.
  • Proactively reaches out to students that are less comfortable with speaking up and seeking support.
Scholarship

● Contributes to the continual improvement of Tech Elevator by participating in post-cohort retrospectives and submitting or addressing curriculum bugs. ● Is knowledgeable of all facets of the Tech Elevator curriculum, self-identifying gaps where additional experience and learning is needed in order to effectively support a given curriculum topic.

Experience and Requirements:
  • Tech Elevator software development bootcamp graduate within the last 6 months
  • Strong knowledge and experience with Java or C#
  • Experience working PostgreSQL/MS SQL, building RESTful APIs with Spring Boot or ASP.NET Web API, and HTML/CSS/JavaScript.
  • Understanding of developing a web application using a front-end framework such as Vue.js
  • Knowledge of Agile software development
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Genuine desire to help others learn.
  • Ability to work some evenings.
Working Conditions:

Regular office hours defined prior to hire Evening and weekend hours as discussed specific to a location or campus.

This is a home-based position.
