Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is seeking a Transportation Construction Materials Engineer (TCME) with a minimum of 5 years of materials testing, materials engineering, and/or statistical analysis experience on highway and bridge construction projects. The successful candidates will join Wood's Project Team performing Owner Construction Oversight services on a mega, multiple-year transportation design-build project in Dallas, Texas.

This position requires candidates with effective time-management, written communication, planning, organization and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidates shall:

  • Have the ability to take initiative, work independently and coordinate efforts with multi-discipline teams
  • Possess excellent attention to detail and have the ability to produce high quality work under short time constraints

Key Technical Responsibilities :
  • Under general supervision and directions, plan project specific construction materials sampling and testing activities in accordance with established project quality management plan procedures and evaluate compliance with project plans, specifications, shop drawings and other project related documents
  • Review and authorize accurate, legible, comprehensive and complete construction materials testing and/or inspection reports submitted the technicians on a daily basis in accordance with established quality procedures
  • Review plans, specifications, general notes and shop/working drawings for assigned activities prior to performing assigned duties
  • Perform, supervise, report on frequency compliance and coordinate field tests on materials and completed work using standard methods established by TxDOT, AASHTO, ASTM or other agency with appropriate, properly calibrated testing equipment
  • Perform mathematical calculations using basic algebra (fundamental laws, algebraic expressions), geometry, and the trigonometric functions of right triangles
  • Train technicians and inspectors on work methods
  • Verify adequacy of number of samples and locations at which samples are collected to assure representative distribution of sampling and testing
  • Perform statistical analyses of Owner Verification Testing and Independent Quality Acceptance Testing results per TxDOT Quality Assurance Program for Design-Build Projects
  • Investigate the testing operations and materials to identify root cause of non-validation between Owner Verification and Independent Quality Acceptance testing results
  • Prepare the quarterly reporting of statistical validation analyses of Owner Verification and Independent Quality Acceptance testing results


Skills / Qualifications

Role Requirements :
  • Licensed as a professional engineer in Texas or has ability to become licensed in Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire
  • Has at least five (5) years progressively experience in transportation engineering with at least two (2) years experience in construction materials testing and engineering
  • Previous experience in supervising construction materials sampling and testing and performing materials engineering on transportation design-build projects in roles of Owner Verification or Independent Quality Acceptance Firm is not required but preferred
  • Shall possess a valid driver's license within the applicable jurisdiction and meet firm's auto insurability requirements
  • Extensive knowledge of:
    • Engineering principles, practices, and methods
    • Engineering fundamentals
    • Engineering calculations
    • Highway construction plans and construction inspection procedures
    • TxDOT test procedures
    • TxDOT standard construction specifications, special specifications and special provisions
    • TxDOT Quality Assurance Program for Design-Bid-Build Projects
    • TxDOT Quality Assurance Program for Design-Build Projects
    • The Texas Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices or Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices
    • Materials used in highway construction
    • Construction management procedures
    • Human resources policies and procedures
    • Management principles, practices and procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of:
    • Material testing methods, processes and procedures
    • Personal computers and the use of applicable software
    • Construction project records management techniques
    • Statistical validation (e.g., F-test and t-test) techniques
  • Considerable knowledge of:
    • Algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
    • Budgetary procedures
  • Ability to:
    • Manage
    • Plan and coordinate work activities, oversee programs, interpret engineering plans, and instruct
    • Direct
    • Assign and review work
    • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
    • Work under exposure to inclement weather conditions
    • Read and understand plans, specifications, instructions, labels, reports, etc.
    • Travel to project sites and maneuver over rough and uneven terrain
    • Prepare and maintain records, files, and reports
    • Maintain effective working relationships with internal and external personnel
    • Follow verbal and written instructions
    • Analyze, problem solve, and recommend solutions
    • Ability to drive company vehicle, manage and complete all assigned jobs, efficiently and on time
  • Required to:
    • Present a professional appearance to best represent the firm
    • Wear personal protective equipment and comply with all safety requirements
    • Comply with all attendance requirements as noted in most current edition of Corporate Policy Manual
  • Skill in:
    • The use of personal computers and applicable software
    • Effective communication
    • Creating an effective and cohesive working group
  • The ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • Must pass drug test, fit-for-duty physical, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy

Physical Demands :
  • Flexibility to travel to construction sites for extended periods and work outside of normal business hours
