GENERAL DESCRIPTIONThe Utility Mechanic II is responsible to the Physical Plant Director of Lamar State College Orange. This is multi-skilled role in the field of utility maintenance and operations, specifically in the HVAC, electrical and plumbing trades, with general knowledge of all three trades.Utility Mechanic II is a leadership role, focused on promoting safe work practices, quality repairs and teamwork with a focus on customer service, supporting the campus infrastructure, staff and faculty.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Duties and responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Maintain the preventative maintenance program for all campus HVAC units, LSCO equipment, and fleet vehicles. Evaluate the PM program regularly for updates and necessary adjustments. Draft PM plans for new equipment.

  • Maintain and troubleshoot electrical equipment on campus. This includes installation, repair, and preventative maintenance work on motors, automatic switches, circuit breakers, buzzers, etc.

  • Maintain troubleshoot and perform limited repairs on HVAC systems on campus. This includes water cooled chillers, cooling towers, various air handlers, above and underground piping systems, control systems, valves and pumps.

  • Install, maintain, and repair plumbing fixtures, as well as all gas, air, water, and sewer systems on campus. This includes piping systems, valves, and centrifugal pumps.

  • Utilize the Team Dynamix Enterprise Service Management Software tool to manage day to day work backlog and document work performed by team.

  • Coach and Guide other physical plant team members to grow talent and promote Physical Plant core team values and skills.

  • Perform regular Quality Assurance and Safety audits on work performed by LSCO Physical Plant team and support vendors to ensure compliance and quality.

  • Oversee maintenance functions and equipment maintenance performed by LSCO Physical Plant team and support vendors.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assume the responsibilities of the Physical Plant Director as directed in his absence.

  • Responsible for maintaining locks and keys, installing and re-keying locks, and maintaining key records.

  • Coach, assist, and guide the Physical Plant team in the performance of their assigned tasks, and promote an atmosphere of customer focus and efficiency.

  • Communicate scheduling adjustment needs and off-hour coverage needs with the Physical Plant team and ensure coverage as needed with Director oversight.

  • Perform other related duties as may be determined by the Physical Plant Director.
Qualifications:

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTSEducationHigh school diploma or equivalent.ExperienceMust have experience in multi-skilled work in the field of utility maintenance and operations. Experienced preferred in the fields of HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems.Experience preferred cutting keys, re-keying locks, and keeping records of keys.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesMust be able to demonstrate proficiency in operations and basic troubleshooting skills on various equipment, including but not limited to:HVAC systems, HVAC control systems, water and air cooled chiller units, chilled and hot water loop piping systems, centrifugal pumps, lift pumps, commercial boilers, plumbing and sewer systems, potable water systems, fleet equipment, general shop equipment, and other various equipment in use on campus.Basic electrical principals' knowledge; troubleshooting short circuits, overloads, and blown fuses and general knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, and practices of the electrical trade.General knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of the plumbing trade.Must possess a valid Texas operator's license.Physical RequirementsRequires constant standing, walking, seeing, pushing, and pulling. Requires frequent lifting, stooping, climbing, bending, and carrying objects up to 75 pounds. Requires infrequent sitting.Security SensitiveThis position is security-sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215.WORKING CONDITIONSOutdoors or in LSCO campus buildings as necessary to accomplish the task at handSCHEDULEPhysical Plant department typically works a 9-80 work week schedule, or some variation thereof depending on Campus Event needs or reliability events.Evenings, weekends, and off hour call-ins are occasionally necessary to support campus needs.
