We are looking for a passionate and seasoned senior colleague to build and enhance strong relationships with the North American STM library community to develop Elsevier's reputation as a trusted, innovative, and collaborative provider of services and content. Librarians and the needs of the library community are and remain important to Elsevier and this role would be the voice of the library community in North America in Elsevier - internally and externally. This senior role builds on extensive existing networks at Elsevier and leverages the broad array of library-related resources across the company.

The North American library relations program will focus on four areas:

(1) the communication agenda,

(2) collaboration with key library organizations,

(3) partnerships with leading institutions, and

(4) an engagement program at selected North American events.

The Vice President, North American Library Relations will use their expertise to participate in developing and apply a strategic framework across Elsevier's business units in North America in support of a long term engagement and partnership strategy with the library world. Working Together

In order to be successful, the Vice President, North American Library Relations needs deep knowledge of the decision-making processes of library leadership, the role of libraries within their universities and colleges, and the needs and values of the library community. The successful candidate will bring a robust network of senior leadership among the relevant research communities and will have a distinguished record of presentations and engagements. Active listening skills, empathy, and respect are key. Experience with in Research Assessment, Open Science, Information Science education, or Health Sciences librarianship is a plus.

The Vice President, North American Library Relations will report to the VP of Global Library Relations in Global Strategic Networks and work with leaders in Marketing, Sales, Product Management, Global Strategic Networks, Access & Policy and Global Communication across Elsevier to help build and execute a strategic framework to develop and maintain excellent library relations in North America.

This position can be home-based in the US or based in New York, Boston or Philadelphia where Elsevier has offices.

Key activities

  • Understand, communicate, and influence the scholarly communication agenda as it relates to the academic library environment in North America within and outside Elsevier, including the current and changing role of the library in the research and education process and multi-stakeholder engagement both on campus and with relevant professional and research organizations.

  • Collaborate with priority library organizations and key influential librarians for Elsevier to establish and develop strong relationships and partnerships with a special focus on iSchool researchers and early career librarians.

  • Build relations with targeted organizations and institutions by engaging regularly with key librarians, library faculty, and information science researchers, developing relevant workshops, and participating in relevant conferences.

  • Attend, network, and speak at key events in North America to develop Elsevier as a trusted, innovative, and collaborative partner for the STM library and information community.

  • Travel: extensive

  • Potential to have a significant impact on the performance of Elsevier and the customers we serve: librarians, researchers, clinicians, educators.

  • High degree of exposure to Elsevier's senior leadership.

Skills & competencies

  • Senior level experience in an academic library that supports significant research activity; sophisticated understanding of external relationships between the library and other campus leaders.
  • Demonstrated networking abilities among senior academic library leaders and well-connected with key library organizations; highly respected by library leadership community in North America
  • Demonstrated excellent ambassadorial qualities to effectively promote Elsevier actively and publicly
  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility initiatives and goals
  • Excellent, authoritative, and credible written and verbal communication skills including ability with social media: able to engage in debate in an open, assertive and non-defensive manner
  • Exhibits drive, and enthusiasm: takes initiative and innovates, shows entrepreneurial instinct. Capable of working independently and shows good judgement
  • Effectively collaborates with colleagues, takes the lead to coordinate when needed
  • Familiar with trends and policies related to one or more of these areas: open access and open science, institutional research assessment, research data management.
  • A degree in library or information science or significant relevant work experience at senior library leadership levels.
