The Department of Biology at Newman University in Wichita, Kansas seeks a full-time visiting professor (one year term beginning in August 2022) faculty member who is broadly trained and can teach lecture and laboratory courses such as microbiology, immunology, and possibly biochemistry, as well as contribute to our team-taught freshman biology courses. Applicants should be strongly committed to teaching in a liberal arts setting; the teaching load is 12-15 contact hours per semester. Our faculty members also advise and mentor students and serve on university committees.

The position begins August 2022. 9-month contract. Benefits starting after first 30 days.

This position is responsible to cultivate and maintain the institution's Catholic identity and its mission to empower graduates to transform society. The faculty member is responsible to uphold this mission in accordance with Ex Corde Ecclesiae, fostering an environment where Catholicism is present while encouraging an impartial search for truth across multiple disciplines engaged in interdisciplinary dialogue.

Essential Work Performed:

  1. Teach students in assigned classes in accordance with course descriptions and/or learning outcomes, the course syllabus, and institutional policies and procedures.
  2. Provide students with a syllabus that includes required institutional policies, course objectives, materials, and methods of evaluation.
  3. Provide a workload schedule showing teaching and office hours (minimum of 5 office hours per week).
  4. Maintain accurate and complete course records and submit final grades by the established deadlines.
  5. Communicate with and provide feedback to students in a timely fashion.
  6. Use knowledge of diverse communities and skill sets to diversify teaching methods and delivery of content in instruction.
  7. Provide effective instruction to facilitate student learning in all classes taught; evaluate and assess student learning on a regular basis.
  8. Use appropriate technologies to enhance classroom or online instruction and to achieve established course objectives or learning outcomes.
  9. Attend scheduled discipline, department, division, and college meetings, as required.
  10. Comply with all required college-level and program-level accreditation standards.
  11. Maintain knowledge and competence in the appropriate academic discipline or workforce field.
  12. Maintain any required professional certification or licensure in the appropriate academic or technical discipline, where appropriate.
  13. Remain current with technological and pedagogical advances that promote continuous improvement of student learning.
  14. Complete all university-required trainings including FERPA and Title IX.

Required Qualifications/Education/Experience/Skills/Training:

  1. Masters in Biology or closely related field.
  2. Strong commitment to student recruitment, academic advising, mentoring and faculty service.
  3. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. in Biology, or ABD.
  2. Broad training in microbiology, immunology, and biochemistry.
  3. Undergraduate teaching experience.
