The University of Denver is the oldest independent university in the Rocky Mountain region, with approximately 12,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. DU is classified as a Doctoral/Research University with very high research activity. The Department of Physics and Astronomy (P&A website) underwent a strong expansion with nine tenure-track and two teaching professor positions filled since 2006. Our diverse and dynamic faculty of 12 includes four women and come from seven different countries. We provide an attentive, hands-on research and learning community for undergraduate and graduate students up through the PhD level. The program is recognized by the APS among US PhD-granting departments for our high percentage of female graduates: placing second nationally at the undergraduate level and third at the graduate level (APS data for the period 2011-2013).

Position Summary

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has a one-year opportunity for a Visiting Teaching Assistant Professor for Academic Year 2022-23. The successful candidate will teach two undergraduate courses per quarter with a total of six courses per year. Typical sizes of lecture courses are 80 to 90 students. Teaching opportunities are primarily in University Physics. Depending on the background of the candidate, one quarter might include a different undergraduate course. The position is non-tenure-track. The University is planning to offer the majority of courses in person next year, and the successful candidate will be expected to teach in person as COVID-19 protocols allow. The start date is September 1, 2022.

Essential Functions

  • Teach undergraduate courses in a manner that creates a supportive learning environment for students with a range of backgrounds and professional goals.
  • Teach courses as scheduled
  • Create and Maintain course Canvas container
  • Assign papers, exams, and other assignments
  • Grade in a timely manner
  • Hold office hours and meet with students over Zoom or in person
Required Qualifications
  • PhD degree in Physics
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching courses at a college level
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $52,000 - $55,000.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
