Job Description

Primary Function of Position:

Lead and provide strategy direction and management to center of excellence that provides centralized expertise on medical device safety, functionality, and effectiveness. Multidisciplinary areas of technical expertise include Biological Safety, Device Reprocessing, Sterility Assurance, Packaging, Product Labeling, Engineering Verification and Reliability of Intuitive product portfolio. Technical Services is responsible to support end to end product life cycle at Intuitive across business units' platforms and Operations and manages strategic partnerships to support market appropriate solutions and services in the above areas for our customers WW.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • This position has responsibility and authority for; Reliability Engineering, Design Verification, Packaging and Product Labeling, Reprocessing, Sterility Assurance and Biological Safety for all new product development and sustaining product portfolio. Including:
  • Providing end to end support to all business unit platforms and Global Operations
  • Developing and proliferating best practices as center of excellence across Intuitive Surgical in the above areas of technical responsibility
  • Developing and leading strategic initiatives that address:
  • Evolving global requirements and compliance
  • Strong internal and external customers value proposition in products and services
  • Customer needs and satisfaction
  • Strategic third-party partner relationships for market appropriate products and services
  • Continued evolution of technical areas of expertise to create best practices, leverage efficiencies and scale for business growth
  • Identify new capabilities needed to support scale
  • Deep collaboration with design engineers, product marketing, clinical, process engineering, human factors, commercial teams and operations
  • Ensuring supply chain continuity of the manufactured medical devices to support da Vinci and Ion procedures
  • Standardizing levels of services across business units, platforms and defining key performance indicators
  • Providing centralized functional verification testing across enterprise for new product development and sustaining projects
  • Driving long term strategies to enable efficiency, automation, and scale of operations
  • Influencing medical device industry in development of new standards and active participation in scientific societies and key opinion leaders (KOL)
  • Identifying strategic partners to develop market appropriate solutions WW
  • Attracts and retain best technical talent required to support the business and strategic goals
  • Promote a highly engaged culture of individuals who thrive innovating and advancing clinical outcomes through robotic technology
  • Active championing of Technical Services value with executive leadership and across organization
  • Clear and solid communications across organization to support overall goals
  • Influencing and negotiating skills across all levels of the organization to align on common goals and escalate issues and constraints
  • Lead centralized testing lab to support all design verification and functionality testing for instruments, accessories and endoscope across platforms driving automation and efficiencies strategies to meet increasing volume demands
  • Support functional Directors and Managers to:
  • Direct teams of toxicologists, reliability engineers, packaging engineers, product labeling specialists, microbiologists, and validation engineers to support product development teams early in the design cycle through end of product life cycle
  • Manage resources to cover competing and overlapping projects and timelines
  • Create and maintain guidance materials for teaching engineers the basics of test methods, cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization validation
  • Oversee all product verification & validation, including reusable and single-use products
  • User Interface for Device Reprocessing
  • Work closely with Product Marketing and Genesis to develop strategies to train customers on reprocessing for da Vinci and Ion devices WW
  • Develop and manage reprocessing instructions for use (IFU) for da Vinci and Ion products
  • Advance robotic field through original research and publications
  • Ensure Technical Services teams and Intuitive Surgical are fully cognizant of current and future regulations, standards, and best practices for surgical medical devices worldwide, both current and pending.
  • Negotiate and lead corporate strategy for achieving and maintaining best in class performance for all Intuitive Surgical products for markets worldwide, while adhering to business constraints.
  • Represent Intuitive Surgical in internal and external audits in the areas of responsibility.
  • Create and maintain effective Department Operating Procedures.
  • Develop and manage budget for organization

Qualifications

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:

  • Minimum MS preferred in Biological Sciences, Bioengineering or System Engineering
  • Minimum Fifteen years' experience in design, validation, and operations in medical devices with multiple years at a senior management level
  • Impeccable character. Lead by example
  • Ability to build high performing technical teams through hiring, training, coaching
  • Proven ability to lead and a proven track record to deliver results, and influence across organization and hold teams accountable
  • Proven ability to inspire and build effective relationships, leading with inclusion and diversity to attract and retain talented and creative teams
  • Strong understanding of medical device industry, design controls, risk management and compliance requirements; including device verification and validation
  • Direct experience with hospital Central Services is a strong plus or deep understanding of device reprocessing
  • Strong analytic skills as proven by analyzing and fixing complex problems in products and processes.
  • Lean, Six-Sigma training strongly desired
  • Proficiency across the Microsoft Office suite of productivity software
  • Excellent judgment in the presence of competing priorities and incomplete data; proven ability to make difficult trade-offs with good judgment
  • A passion for finishing the vital thing efficiently and well, and attention to the right details.
