Nature of Position: Temporary, part-time

Job Summary/Basic Function
Millersville University occasionally needs temporary, part-time instructors in its Applied Engineering, Safety and Technology department.

The purpose of this posting is to generate a pool of qualified faculty. Applications submitted will be reviewed on an as needed basis based on enrollment. Anyone meeting the qualifications may be contacted for an interview and potentially hired when a need exists. In the event that you are interviewed but not immediately hired, your application will remain in the departments pool of qualified faculty.

Applicants will teach undergraduate and graduate technical courses in one or more of the following areas: computer-aided drafting and design; production materials and processes; printing and packaging technology; graphic communication management; occupational safety and environmental health; industrial hygiene; robotics; energy, power and transportation; industrial controls and automation; construction technology; construction project management; bio-related technology; and technical management to include quality assurance. Courses include both a lecture and laboratory component.

In addition to teaching, there is an expectation for scholarship and service commensurate with the assignment.
Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications as well as aligned with the details contained in the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the Millersville University Promotion Statement.

Minimum qualifications required to be considered for appointment at the rank of instructor include having an earned masters degree in occupational safety & environmental health or related field.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree plus 15 semester hours of graduate credit in a field relevant to area of application.
  • Applicants should hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree in industrial technology, an engineering discipline, engineering technology, architecture, computer aided drafting and design, construction management, technology education, occupational safety and environmental health, or a related area.
  • Experience supervising, maintaining, and improving a technology laboratory facility; and a willingness, ability and commitment to teach in a lab-based learning environment.
  • Three years professional experience with documented effectiveness in teaching or training.
  • Willingness and commitment to teach in a laboratory-based, hands-on teaching/learning environment.
  • Proficiency in the application of information technology relevant to the teaching and learning process.
  • Evidence of commitment to serve diverse populations.
  • Commitment to promote a safe and healthy learning and research environment.
  • Commitment to the involvement in and support of student organizations.
  • Verifiable ability to work cooperatively with colleagues.
  • Successful interview.
  • Successful teaching demonstration.
  • Successful completion of three background checks.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a field relevant to the area of application
  • Industrial experience.
  • Prior college-level teaching experience.


Job Description

Part-time faculty members shall maintain a prorated number of office hours each week, at a minimum of twenty-five (25) minutes for each workload hour taught, at such days, times and locations as will accommodate the needs of the students.

This position requires in-person instruction on Millersville University’s campus. This position is contingent upon sufficient enrollments in assigned classes.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION: The Department of Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology is comprised of 13 faculty members, one full-time and one half-time secretary, two full-time laboratory technicians, and 450 students collectively majoring or minoring in Applied Engineering & Technology Management (AETM), Occupational Safety and Environmental Health (OSEH), Automation and Robotics Engineering Technology (ARET), Manufacturing Engineering Technology (MFET), Technology & Engineering Education (TECE) and a graduate program in Technology and Innovation. Technology & Engineering Education teacher preparation is for those interested in becoming Technology & Engineering Education Teachers at the K-12 levels; the Occupational Safety & Environmental Health major is offered for those seeking to become occupational safety & health professionals; our Automation and Intelligent Robotics is for those students with a keen interest in advanced robotics, industrial automation and programming applications; Manufacturing Engineering Technology is a very technical program that serves students with interest in the manufacturing industry. It includes coursework in materials & processes, manufacturing, drafting & design and automation. Lastly, our Applied Engineering and Technology Management program is for students whose career paths take them towards applied engineering and management professions.

Osburn Hall, a dedicated facility for the Department, houses its classrooms, state-of-the-art laboratories and offices. This campus center for the study of applied engineering, safety and technology is organized according to technology clusters. The Production cluster includes facilities for materials and processes including a complete wood technology laboratory, polymers and ceramics laboratory as well as a complete metallic materials laboratory.

Essential Functions
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Ability to:
    • sit or stand while teaching.
    • speak clearly.
    • communicate via writing exceptionally well
    • understand verbal communication (read and understand verbal messages).
    • use construction tools safely.
    • move to and from campus buildings, offices, classrooms and stage areas.
    • climb ladders.
    • stoop or bend to pick things up.


  • Must be able to lift/pull/push up to 10 pounds without assistance.
    • lift student paper bundles, small boxes, scene shop equipment and materials.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift/pull/push heavier items with assistance.
  • Teach courses face-to-face and online if necessary at the higher education level using lectures, demonstrations, class discussion, using online tools and/or equipment and/or other appropriate tools appropriate modes of education delivery.
  • Able to record and calculate grades, prepare course outline and syllabus, develop course and lesson plans, engage in the selection of appropriate textbooks and other teaching aids necessary to the delivery of instruction.
  • Use computer for email, obtain information on websites, prepare class documents, grade papers, submit final grades online and other duties related to teaching and advising students and serving the department, college, university and community.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risks.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and mouse.
